Defense Industry Benchmark 2008
The Ethics Resource Center (ERC) is offering the Defense Industry
Benchmark (DIB) to Defense Industry Initiative companies. The DIB
provides participating companies the opportunity to better understand
the impact of ethics and compliance programs, while creating an
effective industry benchmark.
The DIB, surveys a sample of
employees in each company. It takes approximately 15 minutes of
employees' time to complete. The DIB provides comparisons to DIB peers
and national averages on the following measures:
- Awareness of the resources of the ethics and compliance program
- The impact of the ethical culture of the organization
- Generally expected results of an effective program

Since the 2005 survey, ERC has advanced our survey capabilities, to provide participating companies with the following:
Flexibility in timing of the survey.
Companies can launch their survey on a company-appropriate schedule. However, for increased comparability with peers, companies should complete their survey by the end of February 2008.
Multiple sampling methods.
Participating
companies can take either a census survey or a sample survey. The
survey price allows companies to have under 25,000 employees take the
survey – whether it is a sample or census (ERC can accommodate over
25,000 employees, but at an additional cost to the company). ERC
reccomends a sample survey, as the accuracy of the results is not
affected, while keeping costs down.
Updated question set.
ERC has modified our organizational survey instrument based upon key findings from our 2005 National Business Ethics Survey research.
Tailored survey instruments.
Each company must use the "core" DIB questions in their surveys, but ERC will allow participants to tailor the instrument to meet their organization's needs.
Advanced analysis by ERC.
Company reports will include descriptive statistics for each question, along with comparisons to the DIB Average and ERC's national data. Additionally, the report will highlight the impact of the formal program and the ethical culture of the organization on the expected results of an ethics program. Finally, the report will include recommendations for next steps based upon ERC's analysis.
Access to data through our new Benchmarking Portal.
ERC has built an online Benchmarking Portal that allows organizations access to their survey data and the ability to conduct their own analysis. The organization's report will be on the Benchmarking Portal, and DIB participating companies will be able to share ideas and data with one another through the system. Access to the Benchmarking Portal can be given to an organization's employees (at the discretion of the organization).
Sliding Scale Pricing Structure
ERC will provide a sliding scale fee that reflects a reduction from our normal rates for DII member companies. ERC's staff would be glad to assist you in identifying any additional costs that may need to be added.
ERC will provide details of the survey process, question sets and draft contracts for your review. We are also happy to demonstrate our new benchmarking portal if it is of interest. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, or if you are ready to initiate the survey process.
