Job Summary and Mission

This job contributes to Starbucks success by supporting programs to ensure compliance with Starbucks Standards of

Business Conduct. 

  • Conducts complex investigations involving allegations of violation of law and company policies
  • Reports findings to appropriate operations, partners resources, and legal partners
  • Promotes ethical behavior, facilitates proper decision-making, and provides Starbucks partners with the tools and resources to make ethical business decisions
  • Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles


Summary of Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts legal compliance investigations
  • Prepares detailed investigation report and/or summaries
  • Partners with attorneys, business units and departments before, during and upon completion of investigation
  • Provides consulting and coaching to partners to ensure compliance with the law and company policies
  • Assists with request for information from internal and external sources, e.g. legal department, EEOC, DOL, etc.
  • Performs ad-hoc analysis of data for identification of trends
  • Provides coaching, direction and leadership support to team members in order to achieve partner, business and customer results
  • Stays current with relevant laws and investigation techniques

Summary of Experience

  • Compliance, Legal, Human Resources or a related function experience conducting complex employee and labor relations investigations (5 years) 
  • (confrontational and informational) and issue resolution
  • Interfacing and consulting with all levels of management, including senior executives
  • Interpreting, applying and assuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations, as well as corporate policies regarding employee and labor relations matters
  • Drafting EEOC and FEPA position statements, and responses to external agencies
  • Working in a litigation environment where maybe called to provide testimony through depositions and/or trials

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, manage and negotiate resolution of complex issues which may have no established precedent for resolution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employment and labor laws, such as Title VII, ADEA, Pregnancy Discrimination Act, Equal Pay Act, Executive Order 11246, FLSA, FMLA, ADA, NLRA and relevant state laws and local ordinances
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and writing
  • Ability to work independently in setting priorities, meeting deadlines and managing multiple duties in a fast-paced, changing environment
