Purpose Statement

This position will be an integral part of implementing a robust North American Compliance Program for Direct Energy.  This individual is responsible for acting as the key subject matter expert for the retail energy and home protection plan business, by providing compliance advice and assistance to business stakeholders and Compliance Advisors. This position will report to the Director, Compliance and will interact with all levels of the company.


  • Track, interpret (with assistance of Legal and Regulatory Affairs) and implement applicable legal and regulatory requirements, enforcement trends and developments.  Assimilate results to incorporate with the following responsibilities:
    • Drafting and approving Direct Energy policies, standards and procedures.
    • Drafting and approving for dissemination communications to stakeholders (employees, contractors, suppliers)
    • Review and update the Ethics & Compliance Risk Framework
    • Advice E&C Advisors and Compliance Assurance team on regulatory interpretation
  • Meet with other company stakeholders for input to updates to corporate compliance program, such as internal audit, risk control, regulatory affairs, legal, human resources, information technology / information services

Competencies and Qualifications


  • General knowledge of US Sentencing Guidelines, US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), UK Bribery Act, and other similar provisions applicable to Centrica’s NA businesses which define the requirements for an effective E&C program
  • In depth knowledge or experience with protection plan or home warranty laws, retail energy regulations, and state consumer protection laws and regulations
  • Clear understanding and absolute adherence to ethical principles, company values Our Code and policies
  • Ability to identify and explain compliance requirements and convey messages to all stakeholders
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to details
  • Excellent working knowledge of Excel, Word, and PowerPoint (Visio desirable)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use good judgment related to sensitive matters

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is required
  • Legal degree preferred

Work Experience

  • 7+ years of professional experience
  • 5+ years of relevant U.S., Canadian, regulatory, legal or compliance work experience. Energy sector preferred.
  • Retail energy sector experience preferred
