As the Director, Global Trade Compliance, you will provide strategic direction and leadership for the global trade compliance function (including export control, anti-bribery/corruption  and anti-money laundering (AML) /sanctions compliance) to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and in accordance with Assurant’s ethics and compliance standards.

You will lead and manage the day-to-day operation and implementation of the global trade compliance program across all business units through innovative approaches, strategic direction, and measurable impacts, and will require working collaboratively with groups across the company including Business, Finance, IT, Purchasing and Operations areas.

In addition to global responsibilities, you will also serve as the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)/AML and Export Control Officer for US entities.

Primary Responsibilities:

Develops sustainable global trade compliance programs (including export control, anti-bribery/corruption and AML/Sanctions) for all Assurant regions and business units in accordance with Assurant’s established compliance standards.

  • You will provide strategic advice and guidance to senior leadership and company personnel on the application of trade compliance regulations, anti-bribery/corruption laws (including the FCPA and the UK Bribery Act) and AML/sanctions laws of the US and other applicable jurisdictions.
  • Oversee business partner onboarding, restricted party screening, approval of export/import transactions, recordkeeping, and other processes and systems related to trade compliance.
  • Ensure proper jurisdiction, classification, Schedule B, HTS, and valuation determinations for all exported and imported items, as applicable.
  • Provide oversight of third-party representatives, gifts and entertainment, and other aspects of the company’s anti-bribery/corruption program.
  • You will develop program materials, conducting annual risk assessments and preparation of required filings or other communications.
  • Responsible for employee communication and training programs that focus on the elements of a company-wide trade compliance program.

Identifies gaps and assists with resolution of issues

  • You will perform assessment of risks and identify potential areas of compliance vulnerability; develop/implement corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provide guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future.
  • Assists in remediating trade compliance issues as necessary, including but not limited to putting together project plans, connecting resources to find solutions, documenting resolutions, and documenting remediation plans.
  • Identify opportunities to better leverage technology to create efficiencies, increase consistency, and improve controls.
  • Provides compliance advice, investigates complaints and verifies deficiencies are corrected.
  • Analyzes reports and metrics pertaining to various elements of the global trade compliance program, and reports out to senior management on trends, areas of concern and improvement opportunities.
  • Supports internal compliance audits and assists with managing external audits or inquiries from government agencies Maintains accurate data and recordkeeping to include collecting and retaining records in response to third-party inquiries relating to Assurant compliance practices and business activities.
  • Ensures alignment with legal and ethical standards of the organization.

  • Identify best practices and skill growth opportunities for team members and establish ongoing learning plans for team.
  • Work closely with staff to understand individual needs, level or performance and assist in achieving individual excellence within their roles.

  • 8 years progressive responsibilities in legal, audit, compliance, risk and/or ethics in a large, multi-national company
  • 3 years people management experience
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Subject matter expertise in one of the following, and significant working knowledge and experience in the other two areas:
    • export control
    • anti-bribery/corruption
    • AML / sanctions compliance
  • Significant knowledge and experience in implementing global trade compliance programs, including regional and global training and communications and risk assessment processes and programs
  • Knowledge of industry global and regional regulatory standards with strong understanding of all risk areas impacting an organization (anti-corruption, anti-trust, regulatory, data privacy, trade compliance), with the ability to operationalize compliance controls, processes, awareness programs into the business
  • Knowledge of US Customs and Border protection (CBP), Export administration Regulations (EAR), US Treasury Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC), Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) and Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (CTPAT)
  • Up to 30%,  International travel will be expected in the future

Desired experience, skills and knowledge:

  • Experience in financial services and/or the mobile phone industry preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in International Trade, Supply Chain, Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • JD, MBA or equivalent, or advanced compliance certifications (CCEP or equivalent) preferred
  • 10+ years progressive responsibilities in legal, audit, compliance, risk and/or ethics in a large, multi-national company preferred
  • 5+ years people management experience
